Data collection
To complete the goals of this analysis, all three localities provided data related to their land use regimens. Both spatial and non-spatial data is included. This section outlines what types of data have been collected so far from each locality.
Land use and zoning
This group includes the following types of GIS data:
- Parcels: All real property lots within a locality
- Current zoning: Boundaries of current zoning districts
- Current land use: Existing use of parcels (e.g. single-family, industrial, etc.)
- Future land use: Designated future land use categories based on current comprehensive plan
All three localities have provided sufficient forms of these datasets. However, the data structures are not consistent. For example, the current land use designations for each parcel may be a field included in the parcel shapefile, or they must instead be joined using separate non-spatial real estate assessment records.
Infrastructure
Data in this group include public and private infrastructure that strongly influence where new housing can or cannot be developed.
- Public water: Boundaries of current publicly-provided drinking water service
- Public sewer: Boundaries of current publicly-provided wastewater service
All localities provided spatial data for public wastewater service. Public water service data was received from Rockbridge and Buena Vista.
